Ten on Tuesday

1.I’m going to rant for a minute, and then we’ll get back to the usual. I got off the T on my way home and saw that there was a trolley waiting when I got to the stop of the stairs at Ashmont, so I sped up. There was a group of teen aged girls walking in front of me, one of whom had just been screaming “these people move like fucking turtles!” as she was racing up the stairs and shoving her way between people. One of the girls was walking just in front of me to the right, so I walked between her and the fence to pass her, just barely brushing her with the sleeve of my jacket. This brought on a slew of “you could say excuse me!”s, followed very quickly, very loudly, and just as soon as I was out of arms reach by “fucking whitey bitch!” I’m sorry, but I barely touched you. Also, I’m pretty sure that if I had called you “fucking blacky bitch” there would have been a riot, so maybe we should leave the racial slurs out of it. And you know what? I waited until there was room to pass you without making you move, and that meant I ended up missing my trolley. I’m really, REALLY tired of the entitled attitude that I see again and again from the teenagers that I ride the T with every day. I once listened to a girl who couldn’t have been over 14 telling her friends about how she had jumped and then punched repeatedly HER MOTHER because her mom had broken her sunglasses. I constantly watch these kids cut in front of people to get onto trains/trolleys so that they can get a seat, and then never offer their seat to elderly riders, pregnant riders, or small children. Where the heck are the parents that raise these kids!? Grrrrr. And just to prove I’m not a “fucking whitey bitch”: I had the best seat on the trolley once I got on – the first seat next to the rear door – and then gave it up to a pregnant woman who was very grateful for it.

2. And now back to our regularly scheduled programming…I was having trouble syncing my iPod over the weekend and ended up resetting it. This was perhaps premature, but I got frustrated and it was the quickest solution, so I did it. I’ve been listening to my entire iTunes collection on random at work, and apparently forgot to tell it I only wanted my checked songs because I keep noticing that Christmas music has snuck into the mix!

3. I’ve been eating more salad lately – I try to make a BIG salad at the beginning of each week and then dish it out into tupperware to take to work each day and sometimes have a bowl before dinner at night – and recently had the brilliant idea to buy raw sunflower seeds to throw in. I have thanked myself for that every. time. I’ve had a salad for the last few weeks. YUM. Plus, they’re good for me!

4. Other food habits I’ve fallen into recently: I got a box full of Bear Naked granola samples when I volunteered at AIDS Walk, and I’ve been mixing one pouch into my yogurt every morning ever since (also YUM). I’m not sure when this happened, but I have a tea & chocolate break at work every afternoon – always Stash Merry Mint tea and the chocolate alternates depending on what I can get a hold of. I’m not having luck finding my fav Dagoba Chai Chocoloate, but this Green & Black’s is a tasty substitute…and this Dove has been filling in since I had to hit CVS to restock recently. Now you know what to send me in care packages!

5. Speaking of care packages – you can send me love letters while I’m at the 3 Day. This was HUGE HIGHLIGHT for me last year, I really loved reading the notes I got. I still have them on my desk at home, and I still read them again periodically. Unfortunately, they say no packages so you may have to send the chocolate in a padded envelope. ;) Here are the details:

Send letters to:
Breast Cancer 3-Day Camp Post Office
ATTN: Sarah G
P.O. Box 8534
Warwick, RI 02888

Envelopes only, please. No boxes or large packages. Mail must be postmarked no later than July 14th in order to ensure delivery at the Breast Cancer 3-Day Camp Post Office.

6. On that note, we’re doing two bowling fundraisers for our 3 Day team this week. Hopefully we get a lot of folks that show up, and hopefully they come with cold, hard, cash that they throw at us! :) Cross your fingers for us, and if you’re local (or know someone that is) and would like more details please email me (sgiaccai (at) gmail (dot) com) and I’ll pass them on.

7. While I’m at it with the 3 Day stuff – here’s the Boston 3 Day Supporter page. You can go there to find out more about the opening and closing ceremonies. There should be more info about cheering stations posted next week, so check back there and then come out and cheer us on! Also, if you want to get really fancy, send them an email about and organize a “private cheering station” on Saturday and use it to throw SB a birthday party to walk through! ;)

8. Alyssa is on her way here from NY as we speak (see stack of sheets and towels waiting for guest above), and I’m picking her up at the bus station just after ten. Would it be totally inappropriate for me to wear my PJs on the trolley to pick up the Zipcar, pick her up, drop the Zipcar off, and ride the trolley back home?

9. I know I’ve been a delinquent blogger lately…so please catch up: Birthday, laundry day, silver lining?, harbor seals, newborn, note to self:, Kman & cake, happy bench monday!

10. What’s been keeping me from blogger? An addiction to Dexter. Perhaps not entirely – I also haven’t been taking lots of pictures because the weather has been so miserable here lately. I won’t promise that things will improve soon because I’m still spending 20ish hours each week training for the 3 Day, but come August things should get better!

10 on Tuesday

1. Pete and I saw Away We Go tonight. I thought it was sweet and funny. He was not impressed. That is, in part, because he looks at movies much more critically than I do. I just sat back and enjoyed the story and the cuteness, he had high expectations because it’s made by the same person that made American Beauty (or so he tells me…and I didn’t like American Beauty anyway).

2. Overnight Pete and I had the comforter only half pulled up because it’s been warmer lately. Champ snuggled down in between us, under the comforter. Then Barley noticed something going on, and he stomped right over and stepped on his sister. She settled in again. And then he did it again. She got the message and hopped off the bed.

3. I was bummed that SB is going to be out of town and I wouldn’t have my regular walking buddy this weekend, until I saw that the T will be busing from Ashmont to JFK/UMass all weekend…and the idea of getting to walk out my door and not be taking the T to meet up with someone to walk became much more enticing. Time to download an audio book to keep me entertained! Librivox here I come…

4. I got a phone call from Emily this afternoon because Ben and Claire have requested a video conference. It’s been a while since I’ve seen those little guys, I think we need to schedule a regular time for that!

5. My knee has really been bothering me tonight. I think it’s partly due to the sitting still for the movie after having sat still at work all day and partly due to the weather. Stupid, stupid knee.

6. I had gotten used to the warm weather and decided to wear a dress to work today. And then I froze. I’ll be wearing pants tomorrow. I thought the “showers” belonged to May?

7. Friday night is girls night and I’m making cheese fondue for dinner and chocolate fondue for dessert. I can’t wait to stuff myself silly!!!

8. That book I was reading last week? I finished it in about 4 days. And now I need to get my hands on the next one. I hate that it’s still only available in paperback. I’m going to try and get it from the library. When I tried that with New Moon I had to put a hold on it and got a message back saying “you are 164 in line, you should get this book around December 2009”. No Joke. While I caved and bought the paperback of New Moon, no way am I going to cough up the cost of a hardcover for this series!

9. I’m currently standing at the dining table keeping an eye on Champ. In the 30 minutes since Pete went upstairs to bed, she has tried twice to eat Barley’s food from his bowl. The entire time, Barley was sitting just outside the kitchen not caring. Now that I’m standing right outside the kitchen, she’s laying “casually” in the hallway, pretending like she won’t dart to his food bowl as soon as I go upstairs.

10. I don’t mind if it rains tomorrow, I just hope it stops while I’m heading to work, out for lunch, and home again. I am okay with the grey skies and lack of sun (for now), but I am not okay with being cold and wet every time I’m outside. Are you listening weather? I don’t think I’m asking that much!

10 on Wednesday

1. I know, I know, I was supposed to do this yesterday. Pete and I walked 5 miles yesterday, and because I was at work late and we took a break to feed me, we didn’t get home until 8:40. That doesn’t give me much time to get anything done before bed!

2. Dear Peapod,
If you were willing to give a discounted delivery window smaller than 5 hours, I would be seeing you again tonight instead of walking the 1 block to visit your competitor. I miss you, but I need a bit more flexibility if we’re going to be in a relationship again. Think about it. Get back to me.
Love,
SG

3. My knee is hurting again and I know what my doctor will say if I go see her. I want to go see a Physical Therapist about it, but I just don’t have time to do it until after the 3 Day. And by then I’m sure it won’t be hurting anymore. Makes me crazy!

4. Yup, I have succumb to the Twilight series. They are trashy and ridiculously over the top and poorly written. But I picked up New Moon at Borders last week and started reading it over the weekend. Based on my TV watching and book reading habits, my “relative age” (ha! a New Moon reference for you, even) would start at 14.

5. Holy crap! I just saw that on Stephanie Meyer’s website there is a playlist created to go with each book. You better believe I’ll be downloading those and throwing them on my iPod. I mean, it probably enhances the reading experience to listen to the playlist while I read, right? It even tells you who’s point of view the song is coming from so you can figure out what part of the story it goes along with. AWESOME.

6. I’ve been falling really behind on my 3 Day training blog, and sat down tonight with the goal of getting myself organized and catching up. This was hindered a bit by the fact that I got through the first post and then couldn’t for the life of me remember where we had walked the next day. I did eventually find a few pictures from that walk (but not where I thought they were) and figured it out, but it took me longer than it should have. Now that I have, though, I’m all set to plug away at getting the blog back up to date again tomorrow.

7. Pete and I have started watching It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on DVD. It’s nice having something shorter than a movie to watch during the week, but it’s a half hour show, so we’ve actually been tearing through it even though we only started watching over the weekend. Tonight we watched one entire DVD (6 episodes). We’ve got a few seasons to go before we catch up to current, so it should keep us entertained for a few more weeks.

8. This Sunday SB and I are volunteering at the AIDS walk. I’m particularly excited about this because a friend that I graduated with from Catholic is walking and it will be fun to get a chance to catch up with her and cheer her on.

9. Now that it’s 10:30 at night, I can’t for the life of me remember what I had thought earlier today and then thought “oh! I should add that to my 10 on Tuesday!” Guess I should have texted myself a note.

10. Instead of another thought, I’ll actually just point you to this beautiful picture. If you check out Cat’s photo stream, you’ll see about a million photos of the sun setting over the beach in Santa Cruz. Every time she posts one, my heart dies a little bit because I don’t live there and can’t witness that for myself on a regular basis.

10 on Tuesday

1. Wow. That long weekend was awesome. Not awesome? Being back at work today! It wasn’t a particularly horrible day, but when you start the day by spending an hour waiting for your computer to download a security update while you can’t do anything but twiddle your thumbs (or make a giant, scary, to do list)…well, it just makes it that much harder to go back to work after the long weekend!

2. Fun things from this weekend…Saturday I shot some maternity portraits of Mike and Leyre, which you can see here (Leyre, I added a few more so make sure you look). Please let me know which ones you like and why, I’d love feedback on them! Please don’t leave comments telling me that the titles for the pictures suck – it was late when I was uploading them and I was tired and uncreative. On Sunday SB and I did a training walk with some of the other Boston 3 Dayers. Including our walk from the T to meet them and the detour when I missed a turn in the North End it was 15 miles. Monday SB and I walked 9ish miles on a route that ended in the pool/hot tub at Maria’s house. There’s a distinct possibility that we will plan all of our future training walks to end there. Yup.

3. Anyone seen Happy Feet? I heart Mambo, but I HEART his little Mexican penguin friends! I watched that last night while doing laundry. Pete and I also watched WALL-E this weekend, and that was very cute as well! Have I ever mentioned how much I love that we can stream Netflix on the 360?

4. I have a massage tomorrow, and I know I’ve mentioned how much I love Stephanie! I have a nice little surprise for her on my back, in the form of really awesome sun burn/tan lines from my apparently not so water-proof sun block. I think because it’s spray and not lotion? But nothing is grosser than putting lotion on when you’re walking 15 miles in Boston summer humidity and you’re sweaty and disgusting. I may need to figure out some other sun block plan of attack for the pool-after-walking plans.

5. Tonight Pete and I got Ice Creamsmith. It was d-e-licious! They do three flavors of the month, and one of this month’s flavors is black raspberry, which is a favorite of mine…and there’s not much time left this month to eat it!

6. The cats have been extra hyper lately. Apparently the break they took from the 5 AM Kitty Olympic Games is over, because this morning there were no fewer than 6 times where I quickly looked over to the edge of the loft because it sounded like one of them was surely about to go over. I may start locking them in separate closets at night. Please don’t call the MSPCA on me. I just need to sleep.

7. When I’m not trying to sleep, though…the kitty antics are pretty hilarious. Tonight I saw Barley jump about three feet straight up into the air, and that’s one of my favorite crazy cat moves. When not being ridiculously hyper, Barley has been extra snuggly lately. I’m hoping that Champ witnesses how not evil snuggling is and starts getting more snuggly herself.

8. I can’t decide if it’s really nice that all of the TV shows I watch regularly are done for the season, or really sad.

9. What happened to the warm weather? I wore cropped yoga pants and a long sleeved shirt to walk tonight, and as soon as I stepped outside I was wishing I had worn sweat pants! Wasn’t I basking in the sun at the pool just yesterday?

10. I’m behind on my 3 Day training blog, and my goal for tomorrow is to catch up! I have a bunch of pictures from recent training walks and need to get them posted over there. I figure putting it here makes me accountable…right? I said it out loud, now I have to do it.

10 on Tuesday

Let’s get back on track here, I know it’s been a few weeks…

1. Last Tuesday, instead of writing my 10 on Tuesday and taking a picture to go with it, I was out for dinner with Ma and Bec to get all the good news from Bec and Pepe’s wedding! Bec mentioned that one of her friends had resolved this year to always take a full hour for lunch, and always leave the office to do it. Since she started, she’s been feeling more focused and productive in the afternoons, and after hearing about it I decided I needed to do that. I have a nasty habit of just eating at my desk, but then around 2 or 3 every afternoon I hit that lull – where I need a nap or a snack. Anyway, I’ve started taking walks at lunch time over the last few days, and it’s been the perfect weather for it. Cool enough to not be a sweaty beast when I get back to the office, warm enough to not freeze to death even when I’m along the water and the wind blows.

2. I missed last week’s Biggest Loser (because I was out partying with Ma and Bec), and am currently Tivoing this week’s while I read the recap of last week’s on Television Without Pity. It’s been a long time since I’ve read recaps on there, and I realize now that in the case of Biggest Loser, it may actually be more entertaining to just read the recaps each week than to watch the show. But then I’d miss out on the fun of yelling at the TV every time the contestants are dumb, and I bet Pete would hate it if that stopped.

3. I’ve been reading my way through a blog I found recently, Green as a Thistle, from post one. I’m a closet environmentalist (there’s a blog for that, too), so I love reading blogs where normal people do projects like that (making one green change every day for a year, if you’re too lazy to click through). It’s probably going to take me a while to get current on Green as a Thistle, as I’m only on day 331 and she’s been blogging for a year after she finished her 365.

4. Barley loves chewing on plastic bags. Recently he chewed a hole in a bag that made me wonder if there was a mouse in our house. We don’t have a lot of plastic bags in our house, and most of them get used for scooping the kitty litter, so we keep them away from him. Today, Pete replaced the bag in the bathroom garbage can, and so every 30 minutes or so we just hear the sound of plastic being chewed come from the bathroom.

5. The bag that Barley chewed a mouse-like hole in was turned over to the cats as to play with/chew on. And apparently for Champ, to sleep in. Twice the other day Pete discovered her curled up inside of it, sleeping, with just the tip of a paw or tail poking out.

6. Wooohooo! Emily is back on the 10 on Tuesday wagon. Maybe she’ll stay with us this time. ;)

7. Seriously?! Three hours for the Biggest Loser finale? I can’t stay up for that crap! I’m about to catch up to current on Tivo, and I think once I know who won the at-home I’ll turn the TV off and watch the last hour (seriously, how is it an hour for them to tell us who of the final three won? That’s ridic) tomorrow night. This is a warning to any of you that watch not to spoil it for me before then.

8. I was chipping away at the Apartment Therapy Home Cure for a while there, but about half way through my social life (yup, I really do have one) got very much in the way. I kept saying I would get back on track, but I haven’t. The small changes I made in those first 4 weeks were awesome though, and I think that it’s time to get back into the Cure mindset and revisit my Cure to do list again. Starting with painting my kitchen wall orange.

9. The last few mornings Barley has been waking me up about 30 minutes before my alarm by racing around the house sounding like an elephant, with the starting line somewhere between Pete and I. Apparently it’s not just the starting line, because he usually rockets himself back onto the bed at least once or twice, and then back off when I sit part way up and glare at him. We have no idea what has gotten into him. If he weren’t doing it when I was trying to sleep, I would probably think it’s cute.

10. We got our invitation for Whitney and Ed’s wedding in Minnesota this past week, so I guess we need to start making some travel plans. And hopefully some baseball game watching plans. And baby meeting plans. And Jamie and Jessie wedding plans. And Pete’s fam visiting plans. That’s gonna be a bit of a busy trip, and it falls right after the 3 Day. Until a friend asked the other day what our weekends looked like in July and August, I didn’t realize how crazy of a month July was going to be! It will be nice to see August roll around I think.
