10 on Tuesday…on Wednesday

1. What day is today? It’s Tuesday! Just kidding. It’s Wednesday, but since I spent my day yesterday sleeping and puking I’m going to treat you to 10 on Tuesday a day late. I don’t want to disappoint my fans. Which is really just Lana, I know. But I can pretend.

2. So yup, puking and sleeping all day yesterday. I woke up with a migraine and nausea, but figured if I could eat breakfast to help with the nausea I could take my meds and I’d be fine. Not so much. I puked at work, which is not fun – puking in public restrooms (although at least I was the first to use that stall for the day) sucks, and auto-flushing toilets aren’t nice when you’ve just finished puking and the over zealous auto-flusher splashes you in the face. EW. I know you’re glad I shared that with you. Anyway, I got a cab home and parked myself on the couch (bedroom upstairs and toilet downstairs wasn’t going to work) and didn’t move for 19 hours. Except to run to the bathroom a few times.

3. I had a migraine Saturday, too. It turns out that either my migraines have changed types in the course of three days or I’m suffering from two different types of migraines at the same time. I know you’re jealous of my awesome migraine skillz, suffering two different types in the span of three days. I realize that you’re probably sitting there all “a migraine is a migraine is a migraine, Sarah, quit yer bitchin” but if you are it’s probably because you’ve never suffered from migraines and I hope you never do. They feel different, your body reacts differently, you treat them differently. I can’t remember the official name for it, but the migraine I had Saturday was a tension migraine and the migraine I had yesterday was a classic migraine. Classic ones are the ones where the nausea comes with them. I’m hoping this isn’t a permanent change, because I can usually fight through the tension migraines but the classics are the ones that put me flat out.

4. Moving on to happier subjects, right now Pete is sitting on the couch looking very drowsy and Champ is curled up rather adorably against his leg. They’re cute.

5. I bought 5 more boxes of Girl Scout cookies on Saturday. One of them is gone and two more have been opened. Let’s see if these boxes last longer than a week!

6. On Sunday, I was brought a bag of Caramello Koalas by Maria who just got back from a trip down under (that sounds so cheesy). I brought those to work and have been sharing them with my cube neighbor.

7. I was going to vacuum tonight, I even got out the vacuum cleaner and picked up all the cat toys (see photo of corralled cat toys) and pulled the cord out of the vacuum cleaner…then I realized that I had occupied all of the available outlets with chargers because lots of batteries died today – camera, iPod, spare camera battery. Okay, the spare I just forgot to charge last time I swapped it out. Anyway, now the vacuum cleaner is sitting in the middle of the floor with the cord lying next to it, and I’m sitting my butt on the couch waiting for things to finish charging.

8. How many of you are currently saying “I bet she doesn’t vacuum tonight”? Yeah, you’re probably right.

9. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow, and I still don’t have rain boots. My pretty star ones have cracks in the soles and leak. I tried fixing them with Shoe Goo, but it didn’t work. I’ve tried buying new ones, but it turns out that rain boots are no longer made with a larger circumference, they’re made narrow and snug. I understand that with large calves I will never own leather boots, but for the love of God people, rain boots are meant to be worn with your pants tucked in so they don’t get wet. They are not made to be form fitting and snug! This is not one I’m willing to give up on just yet – hey, it took me three years to give up on finding leather boots that will comfortably fit my 16″ circumference calves (you’re all getting out a measuring tape to measure your calves, aren’t you?). I’ll be looking for mid-calf rain boots soon if I can’t find taller ones, but I’ll find some eventually. I miss my rain boots.

10. Just to prove all you doubters wrong, I stopped working on this and vacuumed. Clean houses are nice. And yes, those are twist ties mixed in with the cat toys. Because our cats love to play with anything that isn’t a cat toy, especially boxes and bags (standard cat amusers). Twist ties, however, are Champs true love, and it’s so fun watching her attack and play with them that we don’t deny her.

10 on Tuesday

1. It’s cold out today, and while the 8ish inches of snow we got recently usually would make me not cranky about that, it’s not working today. I think because I haven’t slept well recently and dealt with lots of annoying stupidity at work yesterday and I haven’t fully recovered yet.

2. Why, when a New England city gets 8ish inches of snow that they’ve been expecting for 2 days, does the city freak out and break? Don’t we do this every year? Don’t we know that the plows should be out all night to keep up? I just don’t get it. This is not new to Boston, this is not rare for Boston, it should not stop the city from functioning.

3. On the bright side, it’s so cold that I’m wearing the yummy cowl I made over vacation, and contemplating making a second one. Why do I need two? I don’t, but it as fun and relatively quick to make and I’d like to try it in a lighter weight yarn so it will be more drapey.

4. I use a travel mug every day for my Starbucks ritual. It is a 12 oz travel mug, a “tall”. Yet it never feels like I’m getting the same 12 ozs as when I get my chai in the paper cups (on weekends when I don’t have my travel mug with me). And it never lasts as long. Can someone explain this to me?

5. Last weekend I volunteered at a meeting for the 3 Day to share my “veteran wisdom” – HA! It was fun, and it got me really excited for this year’s walk. Which is July 24th-26th, for anyone that would like to join me, or just come cheer me on. And if you’d like to donate, you can just steer yourself right over here, to the donation page I haven’t made pretty just yet.

6. You know what’s nice? When Champ wakes me up so early that I get to spray the pee-stopping stuff on the carpet before she gets around to peeing on the carpet. I’m pretty sure that the proud feeling I get when I hear/see her peeing in the litter box every morning is akin to when a parent watches a potty-training child use the toilet. Seriously. I should clarify that the nice part is that she doesn’t pee on the carpet, not that she wakes me up early. She’s actually turning into quite a brat with the waking me up early lately.

7. A friend from high school scanned and posted to Facebook a number of old photos she had come across, and it inspired me to dig up my own. That fun adventure led to finding some that I hadn’t even been thinking about, including photos from the summer that Leyre and I spent on Nantucket. Which then led to me searching for a coworker from that summer online, and finding her on Facebook (of course). Which then led to her pointing me in the direction of another of our coworkers from that summer on Facebook. Which then led to happy (online) reunions, and the inspiration to scan and post those photos to Facebook this coming weekend. I have a feeling this may be a cycle that only runs out when there is no photo left unscanned.

8. Have I ever mentioned how much I like Stash Organic Merry Mint tea? If it was the only kind of tea I ever drank for the rest of my life, I would be okay with that.

9. I just started reading Twilight. I wanted to know what the fuss was about. Also, it’s written by a Mormon, and I like Mormons. It’s a light, quick read and I’ve made it through 226 pages in less than a day. Anything to keep me entertained while I walk on the treadmill!

10. Shockingly, I’m having trouble coming up with a 10 this week. But how about this: since I was walking at the gym after work, that meant dinner fell to Pete tonight. I came home and he was making waffles, and they were delicious. Sometimes brinner is all you need to make your cranky mood go away.

10 on Tuesday

1. Someone has a cold. Can you guess who? When you blow through (literally) 2 boxes of tissues in 4 days, it doesn’t matter if they’ve got lotion on/in them – your nose still turns bright red and everyone that looks at you says “got a cold?” I’m feeling much better today – day 6 of ass kicking cold…the box of tissues I bought this morning may actually last more than two days!

2. Not only is my ass getting kicked by a cold, it is also getting frozen by the cold. Is it spring yet?

3. I’ve been a bad blogger lately, I know. I haven’t picked up my camera much since vacation. In fact, I’ve picked it up twice since then. I’m not really sure why, just not feeling particularly inspired. I’m going to make an effort to change that starting now. I also still haven’t gotten through editing my photos from vacation, so I’m going to set aside some time to do that this weekend. I do have a few more that I’ll post here, and I’ll link to them when I do so you don’t have to keep looking back. Because I like to do what I can to make your life easier, friend.

4. Last weekend was fun – lots of relaxing with Pete and watching Survivor Man and Deadliest Catch. I spent some time at the gym, including catching up on the latest Real Housewives episode and a relaxing (although challenging when you can’t breath through your nose!) yoga class Sunday morning. Lunch Sunday with an old friend at a fantastic new-to-me brunch place, and dinner/Oscars Sunday night with our old roommate.

5. I’m happy to report that I have tested and confirmed that drinking hard cider does not trigger my migraines. Vodka is the other tested and confirmed safe drink. I have some gin that I need to test a few more times before I’m confident it’s safe as well. FYI – it was my boss who encouraged me to just give up the wine and test out other drinks to see if they would be okay. Perhaps he thinks I need to relax?

6. About once a week, the cats decide that getting up when my alarm goes off isn’t early enough for them, and this week it was this morning. Champ was pacing the ledge behind our headboard meowing before my alarm even went off this morning, and after I snoozed a few times (sorry Pete) she jumped right up into his face. I got up, corralled the animals downstairs and fed them both. Usually this settles them down, Champ stays downstairs and plays and Barley goes back to sleep at Pete’s feet. This morning Barley went upstairs…and got frisky. Champ heard him and went upstairs, and a game of chase ensued. Back and forth across the ledge behind the behind the bed, the ledge along the side of the loft, and probably around and under the bed. You know why it ended? Because one of them knocked Pete’s bed side lamp off the ledge. Just another example of why those two are LUCKY THEY’RE CUTE.

7. Remember those two classes I took last semester? I knew in October I had gotten an A- in my first class, and for a few weeks after my second class finished I kept checking for my grade online. It hadn’t posted by the time I left for Christmas vacation, and I promptly forgot to look for it. Until last week, when I went to get my grades to submit for tuition reimbursement and found I’d gotten an A- in that class as well, woohoo!

8. Speaking of school, I had put off officially applying because the program I was interested in was no longer listed on the website. This past week, I got an email from one of my professors saying that the program is still in place even though it wasn’t online and encouraging me to apply. Guess I need to get cracking on a “statement of professional goals”.

9. I bought 5 boxes of Girl Scout cookies on Friday after work (3 Tagalongs and 2 Samoas, if you’re wondering) and managed to only eat 2 of them (um, that’s boxes not cookies) over the weekend, with help from Pete, Jamie, and Ryan for the record. And then…then…I polished off an entire box of Tagalongs yesterday with very little help from Pete. It’s a minor miracle that I haven’t polished off the open box of Samoas today. But the day isn’t over yet…

10. I was at the gym four days last week, and it’s shocking to me how noticeable of a difference it makes. My neck and shoulders are so screwed up despite the monthly body work, but working out this past week has made such an enjoyable difference that I’m not really sure why I ever stopped going to the gym on a regular basis. Now I just need to buy more gym clothes so I can go more often without having to do laundry more often! ;)

10 on Tuesday

1. We’re back from vacation. Working for a living is for the birds!

2. I had planned on keeping this up to date during vacation, but our internet was slow (and sometimes non-existent) and I didn’t have the patience to upload photos.

3. One of the fun things about spending a week with your oldest friends is that you get a glimpse of their daily life and who they are now. I realize that sounds funny because they’re my oldest friends and I should know who they are, and this will be a horrible attempt at explaining myself. When I watch my friends with their children and see what a great parent they are, or with their SO (that’s “significant other”, for those of you not in the know) and see what a great partner they are, or even just when you watch them interacting with our other friends, sometimes I see things like that and it’s a little…stunning isn’t the word. Overwhelming? I guess that will work…overwhelming to see what a great person they’ve become. This is not to say they weren’t always great, but how you look at your friends when you’re 15 is more than a bit different than how you look at them when you’re 29. This is cheesy, and mushy, and whatever, but it’s true: there were moments when I watched my friends over vacation and was so proud of who they are, who they’ve become.

4. On a similar mushy note: In the car after we had left, Pete mentioned how well behaved he thinks Keagan is. His comment was that he was impressed with the K-man’s behavior throughout the week – not throwing tantrums when he was told he couldn’t do something he wanted to, not yelling to get attention, saying please and thank you, things like that. I think it’s a testament to Alannah and Erik being good parents, and a huge one at that. That makes me proud, and seeing them with Keagan is one of those things that sometimes incurs the moments I’m talking about in #3.

5. Still slightly related, I have recently gotten back in touch with a number of people from high school and college who I had lost touch with and had been trying to track down for some time. I think that one of the coolest things about these reconnections is that I get to see what people have grown up to be, and many cases it has struck me as being totally perfect for them, and it makes me so happy to see them doing what they do because I just KNOW that they must be so good at it. Moms, nurses, teachers – it makes me happy to see them doing something that I know they must be great at.

6. Significantly less mushy, and totally unrelated: I went to the gym yesterday and there was a Real Housewives of NYC marathon on. I spent 30 minutes on the elliptical and 45 minutes on the treadmill. I should go to the gym during Real Housewives marathons more often. Or just go to the gym more often, really.

7. You know what wasn’t great about vacation? Yeah, spending the week with a dog totally added to my already extreme puppy fever. I NEED A DOG, PEOPLE. And STAT. Like, yesterday. Only not really, because we can’t fit a dog in this apartment so we need to move first. T minus 3.5 months.

8. We bought a TV this weekend. It’s 32 inches of LCD yumminess, and we love it. Movie night at our house, come on over! 32 inches feels really big when your last TV was 21 inches of square, CRT, horrible sounding grossness.

9. Perhaps the awesomest thing about the new TV is that it has enough inputs for all our other stuff – 360, XBox, Tivo – so we could get rid of the switcher box we were using, AND we were able to program the Tivo remote to control the TV on/off, audio, and input so we went from three remotes (TV, Tivo, stereo because the old TVs speakers were so horrible) to one, wohooo!

10. That one, up there, that you saw ten hours ago when you started reading this post. That’s our one remote. And that smiley guy in the middle? He’s the little Tivo guy that is currently recording Biggest Loser while we stream Netflix, so that I can start watching around an hour into the show. You know why? Because I realized last week that watching Biggest Loser when you can’t fast forward through all the commercials and the repetitiveness is annoying.

10 on Tuesday

1. Things you learn when the weather is not-so-nice out: Which buildings have lobbies or hallways that connect them to others so you can cross a block (or two) without having to be outside. Which buildings are better at keeping their sidewalks clear of slush, snow, and ice so you know when (or when not) to cross the street. Which buildings have USPS/FedEx drop boxes inside so you don’t have to stand outside on the sidewalk to mail stuff.

2. I was grabbing something off the color printer at work today, and hilariously the first page I grabbed had two lines printed on it – someone’s email signature that included “please consider the environmental impact before printing this email”…guess they didn’t get that far when they read the email.

3. This evening my work computer and the T ganged up on me so that I didn’t get home until 8:15.

4. My work computer is so effing slow that I have to stop myself from ripping it out from under my desk and throwing it out the window at least 6 times a day. Especially when it’s 6:45 and I’m trying to go home.

5. I was just talking about movies (and TV shows) with a friend, which lead to me browsing NetFlix, and now I’m really really hoping that we can plug the 360 into the internet next week in NH so I can stream lots and lots of movies and knock some of the gazillions out of our queue.

6. When I took today’s picture, I had recently finished dinner and was only an hour into Biggest Loser, which I started watching at 9:30ish and have been fast forwarding through the crap.

7. Tonight, I will be up past my bedtime.

8. Even though I just started a new trashy chic lit book that I would like to read before bed.

9. This may be the first time ever that I have watched Biggest Loser without eating complete junk at the same time. Should I not include a Biggest Loser something in this each week? It’s always what I have on while I’m posting.

10. Work has been so draining lately that I’ve (temporarily) upgraded to a grande chai every day. Tomorrow I think I’ll go back to the tall. Wish me luck.
