Newcomb

4.3.2011 Newcomb Farms

Sometimes on the weekend, Pete convinces me to get off of the couch and out of pajamas early enough to enjoy breakfast out. We have three different cheap and tasty breakfast places within a short walk of our place, but lately Newcomb Farms has been Pete’s favorite.

Also, note the look of annoyance on his face because I have my camera pointed towards him.

Swish Swish

When Groupon posted a deal for Shabu Restaurant, of course we bought it. And I made sure Anna and Alex saw it, too, because they love Shabu-shabu as much as we do (I think at least half of the emails Anna and I send each other have the subject “swish swish” because we’re making plans to get together for shabu). Obviously we invited them to go with us to use ours.

As usual, Pete and Alex picked the craziest sounding Sake they could find on the menu. I don’t think they have managed to find a more entertaining one than the Poochi-Poochi Nigori Sake from our first visit, but I guess you can’t expect ridiculously translated labels on every sake bottle.

Five Guys

Pete and I had a Zipcar, so we went to Five Guys for lunch. It was a ton of food. And delicious.

My coworkers got me a gift card to Formaggio Kitchen/South End Formaggio for Christmas, and I finally cashed it in. I took Norm with me to shop, because I knew he would appreciate all the delicious cheese and other tasty goodies they sell. We picked up enough cheese for a seriously tasty fondue, some bread, and two bottles of yummy wine…with $8 to spare! ;)

Superbowl Beef Stew

It’s been five weeks since I put “Cook in the crock pot at least once a week” on my Winter To Do List…and I’m all over it! On average, at least. Every recipe I’ve used has been from Not Your Mother’s Slow Cooker Recipes For Two, although I do have a recipe of Lana’s on the books for next weekend. So far there have been two batches of delicious risotto, chili, butternut squash soup, and today it’s beef stew.

When I first put this on my to do list, I envisioned it being totally different than it has been. In my head I was going to toss ingredients quickly into the crock before heading to work and come home to a delicious meal. In the end, I’ve made all of these things on the weekend or when I was working from home in the crappy weather, so I didn’t start any of them in the crock until lunchtime at the earliest. I’d love to find some recipes where there’s less prep (browning of meat, sauteing of onions, etc…) so I can actually throw stuff in the crock in 10 minutes or less and then head to work, but I’m also fine with how things have been working out.

What’s your favorite crock pot recipe? Don’t be greedy, share!
