10 On Tuesday

Sorry I’m a bit late in getting this up…more on that later…

Today’s picture is actually courtesy of Pete, who says “it was much funnier before I took the picture”, which is always the case with these two because it’s like they have a sixth sense that makes them stop being as cute/funny as soon as you reach for a camera.

1. It is cold and getting colder. I’ve been searching online for long underwear, but I think I need to head to the store and try it on before I buy. But it’s going to be so cold this weekend that I don’t want to leave the house…so maybe I’ll wait. Is that counterproductive? Should I go out and buy the long underwear so that I can leave the house this weekend without freezing?

2. I’ve been poking around the web looking to see what there is to do while we’re in NH on vacation. Unfortunately, dog sledding costs $245/couple for a 3 hour adventure. Perhaps not this year, but I’d really love to do it some day. Add that to the life list.

3. Pete and I went to the grocery store after work and I stocked up on quick and easy lunch options for days when I don’t have leftovers to bring to work with me. My goal is to bring lunch to work at least 4 days each week, and so far so good….although I had to buy Monday after I dropped my yummy leftovers all over the floor taking them out of the microwave because I’m and idiot!

4. I’m starting to think about training for the 3-Day, and there are two suggested training schedules – 24 weeks or 16 weeks. The difference between the two is that for the Boston walk the 24 weeks starts February 10th when it will still be freezing cold and the 16 weeks starts April 7th, when I will no longer want to cry when I think about being outdoors. Surprisingly, I’m still considering doing the 24 weeks.

5. Because I can do some of that walking at the gym, in the warm, watching trashy cable!

6. I have been working on improving my posture lately, and my back is a bit sore. That’s a good thing, because it means I’m using my muscles properly to sit/stand up straight. I kind of want the iPosture device, but not for $90. I’m very good at ignoring the “SIT UP STRAIGHT!!!” label stuck on my monitor at work, but I don’t think I could ignore a vibrating disc attached to the front of my shoulder.

7. I really really love Stash Tea’s Organic Merry Mint Green Tea. I was running low at work and completely out at home, so I ordered more and it was delivered today, woohoo!

8. I kept thinking that I had no plans this weekend and would be able to spend the whole weekend inside, cleaning and organizing the house (and/or napping and watching movies). Then I realized that I have book club on Sunday. I love book club and I’m excited for it, but for some reason the realization that I actually do have something to do and will need to leave the house really threw me off.

9. Pete got the first season of How I Met Your Mother on DVD for Christmas, and we’ve been working our way through it. It is hilarious. H-I-LARIOUS, people. Barney is so funny that sometimes I laugh in anticipation of what he’s going to say.

10. Dear MBTA: Please figure out how to send your T alert text messages once and only once on a consistent basis. Once you figure that out, we can work on sending them in a timely fashion, and then on making sure that you follow up (i.e. if you send a text stating there are delays due to a medical reason, be sure to send a follow up text when the train is back on schedule).

Stuffed

I always empty my change into this cute little cow bank that Pete gave me way back when, and lately it’s been so full that I’ve had to shove and shake to get the coins to go in. I sat down to watch Gossip Girl and thought it would be a good time to start rolling. Turns out that there was $2.50 in pennies in there that were taking up the most space – because I was out of penny rolls! There was another $12 of silver, so when I took that to the bank I picked up penny rolls. I think the cow is ready to be fed again!

Follow me, everything is all right

This story is about the great adventure Pete and I took on Sunday morning.
It snowed a bunch overnight Saturday, and one of my favorite things to do on a snowy morning (despite my hatred of cold) is bundle up and go for a walk. Ideally with my camera in one hand and a hot beverage in the other. Sometimes I’m up early and I go out without him, but Sunday we headed out together along the bike path, which runs along the Neposet River to Dorchester Bay, for those not familiar with it. That will be important in a minute. We’re plodding along the bike path with our coffee (him) and tea (me) in travel mugs, me stopping to take photos every once in a while, and as we pass under the trolley tracks and come up on the marshes and I point out how high the water is. Pete points out that it looks like they started plowing the path but stopped halfway to where we were at. We keep walking, I keep taking pictures.
We get closer to where they stopped plowing, and realize that they didn’t plow…the path was flooded. But it doesn’t look that deep and we’ve both got boots on so we plod on through the few inches of water. That turn into 4 inches. And it’s cold water. That turns into 6 inches of freezing water. And at that point, you’re about 40 feet through it and you realize it’s the same distance forward or backward, so you might as well keep going forward. In the freezing water. That is not up to the top of your boots. And is seeping in through the zipper anyway.
I got out of that water and had to take my boots off and dump the water out. I also smelled like a swamp. And thought that if we didn’t get home (via the streets, NOT back through the water) STAT one of us would lose a toe to frostbite or die of hypothermia. Lucky for us, once we started moving our feet warmed up again very quickly. We squished our way home, quickly stripped off the boots, socks, and pants, and both felt fine within minutes.
Our boots, however? Still soaked, and we’re currently working on drying them out by stuffing them with newspapers and switching them out every few hours. My boots still reek of swamp, so hopefully some of the “odorz out” that we bought to help combat the litter box will help.
Anyone else have a great adventure this weekend?!

Doesn’t everyone put birthday candles in their nachos?

Friday was Allan’s birthday (Allan and Pete made On The Other Side, which used to be called Buffalo Soldiers, together), but the celebratory dinner was Saturday night. How the world has managed to survive 29 years of Allan, I’m not sure – but I bet there was a lot of laughing involved. We hit up The Roadhouse in Washington Square (yum) and even though they don’t have nachos on the menu, these showed up at our table to start the night. Someone there must know Allan and his reputation of nacho love!

"Now ponder"

Leyre, Lana, Amy and I headed over to the MFA for girls night because there were two photography exhibits. The Yousouf Karsh exhibit and one with a number of photogs which also had a few Herb Ritts pictures in the mix. Mom took me to the MFA in ’97 to see Herb Ritts’ exhibit Work, and it made me want to be a photographer.  She also took me to see an exhibit (but I can’t remember when) of Karsh’s portraits, and it made me want to be a portrait photographer.  If I’m ever able to produce portraits half as good as Karsh’s, I’ll be happy.
