Spring 2014, Number 1 (Part 1): Run a Half Marathon

2014-04-20 09.38.51-1

View from the run

I talked last year about our running club and the awesome people in it, but I haven’t talked about my personal history with running. Here’s the short version:

I played soccer as a kid, but when I got to high school was forced to give it up (blood clotting disorders and contact sports don’t mix…I still miss you, soccer!). I was told I had to pick a fall sport and there were two non-contact sports to choose from: Swimming and cross country. I knew how to swim, but not well enough to compete in it so I ended up on the cross country team. Which led to the indoor track team. Which led to the spring track team. And so I spent four years running in circles (lots of them! I ran the mile and two-mile). When I got to college I had no interest in continuing to run in circles, but I ran on and off with friends. Post-college I was “too busy” to run, but continued to stop and start a running habit for a few years. Eventually I stopped stopping, and that was due to signing up for the frequent 5k/5-miler/10k races that I run: putting down money and committing to a race is the motivation I need to maintain my base fitness.

The end.

Just kidding, not really the end! This is just where we stop talking about my running history and start talking about my addiction racing and how I ended up registered for a half marathon.

It’s become a joke among my running friends: I mention an upcoming race, they ask if they need to have an intervention about my race registration habit. I wasn’t intentionally running one race per month, but I was pretty close to hitting that average. Last year I thought (as any good daughter in a math/numbers obsessed family would) “13 races in ’13? Sounds fun!” and so that became the goal. As you saw in my Year in Running: 2013 post, I ended up doing a few more than thirteen…and spending more money than I realized on entry fees! I swore to myself that I would cut back and really try to do only 14 in ’14. Until I added a 2014 tab to my race tracking spreadsheet, started looking at the calendar, and spent some time thinking about which races I wanted to run again. Umm…it was never going to be only 14 in ’14. I’m already registered for fourteen races this year (and one next year!) and there are seven more on my radar.

When people hear how frequently I run races they expect that some of them are endurance events – half or full marathons – but that’s not the case. I’m a relatively pokey runner. It takes me nearly an hour to run a 10k, and why should/would I spend more than an hour running? That’s enough to make me feel like I accomplished something and get plenty sweaty! For years running friends have been telling me “You’ll run a half, then you’ll run a marathon. It’s a slippery slope!”. I’ve always countered that it would take me almost two and half hours to run a half marathon, and do you know what else takes two and a half hours but is much more enjoyable? Dinner and a movie! Three and a half episodes of Party of Five! A NAP.

Then I ran the Falmouth Road Race last year – at seven miles it was the longest I had ever raced, on a challenging course during less-than-ideal weather…and I loved it, and thought to myself both during and after the race “I could totally run a half marathon if it were like this”. Finishing a race...and a long runBy “like this” I meant that it had heaps of crowd support – it would be another “party on the run”. I ignored that thought for months, and in January decided I was going to do it. Once, and probably never again. I spent months training the two years I walked the Breast Cancer 3-Day and I still remember the time it took and the impact it had on every other aspect of my life. While I recognize that training for a half marathon, and even a marathon, doesn’t eat up as much time as training for a 3-Day, I have zero desire to repeat that experience (to be clear: the experience of training. The 3-Day itself was one of the most amazing experiences of my life). But I can train for a half once for the experience…so I changed my registration for Boston’s Run to Remember from the 5-miler to the half marathon, and I promptly enlisted help.

And now here I am! Twelve days from running my first half marathon! The training has been fine. Actually, it’s been good and I’m just whiney. I am annoyed to spend time each week matching up my training plan and my personal calendarLong run supplies. I’m annoyed to have to put extra thought and time into prepping for my Sunday runs instead of just meeting up with the Running Dawgs and running an easy, familiar route. But the reality is that neither of those annoyances take much time, and they’re small inconveniences! I’m just tired of thinking so much about running instead of just going and doing it. Honestly, the differences between my training plan and my usual routine are minimal – I run four days each week instead of three, and my Sunday run is longer than our usual 5-6 miles. I really should not complain, especially given that none of my fears have been realized (yet? Knock on wood!): I have not reacted badly to mid-run fuel and pooped my pants (seriously! This is, hands down, my biggest fear*), I have avoided injury so far, and my exercise-induced migraines have been more manageable than I imagined they would be.

* This fear of pooping my pants is not unfounded: when you spend long enough running your body starts to divert blood flow from “less essential” things, like your GI tract, to “more essential” things, like the muscles you’re using to run. This often leads to GI distress for folks training for and participating in endurance events. I’ve heard the horror stories…I don’t want to be one of them.

100 Happy Days

I don’t remember where or how I first came across the 100 Happy Days hashtag, but whatever I saw had me intrigued enough to look into it and discover the site behind it. I had been planning to do some kind of “photo a day” project over the winter, and coming across 100 Happy days mid-January fit perfectly…so I dove in. I ended up with 96 photos, two videos, and two days missed. Honestly, I’m shocked that I only missed two days!!

If we’re friends on Instagram you’ve already seen these over the last few months. For the rest of you (or if you want to see them as a collection/in order) I pulled the photos into an album on Flickr so head over there to see all of my 100 Happy Days in the same place, and check out some of my favorites below!

To Do: Spring 2014

web_4.23.2014_Rainy

I realize we are a few weeks past the official start of spring, but all of the unofficial “it’s spring in Boston!” things have only just been happening – the Red Sox are back at it, the marathon has been run, temperatures are (almost) consistently warm (despite the picture above of my view today), and the magnolias and cherry trees are just starting to blossom – so I’m only just now getting around to this. I’ve been plotting and planning sporadically over the last few months but never really fleshed out a solid idea of what I wanted to get done this spring until last week. Given that I’m shorting myself a few weeks on getting this list completed (and my history of failing to ever complete an entire seasonal to do list), I’m keeping this one a little shorter than usual. So without further ado, here we go:

  1. Run a half marathon (What?! I’m as shocked as you are. Seriously.) StartedDONE!
  2. Scope at the stars at BU’s Coit Observatory
  3. Attend a live taping of Only A Game DONE!
  4. Start volunteering with the Quincy Track Club
  5. Check out the exhibit of Andy Warhol’s Photographs at RISD
  6. Do a serious spring cleaning of the apartment

10 on Tuesday

1. This is one of those weird runner things: I’ve been taking a rolling pin to my very tight calves in an attempt to make up for the torture of suddenly jumping back into my usual workout routine after nearly two months of hibernation.  Sorry calf muscles! I promise you lots of compression sock and rolling pin love!

2. I can’t stop laughing at the Only a Game podcasts – usually while running (now that I’m doing that again, haha). I’m sure people that see me trudging down the sidewalks in the cold -and sometimes snow – laughing out loud think I’m certifiably insane, but come on! Their Superbowl coverage included a story about a friendly wager made between the Seattle Art Museum and the Denver Art Museum and a collection of Superbowl inspired Haiku.  That’s my kind of sports show!

3. There has been much thinking about/planning for the year ahead and what I want to do with it lately. More to come on this, even though I realize that it’s mid-February and it’s a little late for a post on goals for the year.

4. This is totally not my MO, usually I’m annoyed at how fast the weeks are flying by…but this month I can’t wait for the month to be over! Work has been nutty with an event I’m helping organize that happens the last week of the month and I’ll be happy when it’s over and I can fly home, change into PJs, and pour myself a big glass of wine. On the bright side, getting roped into planning this meeting means a mostly work-sponsored trip to Atlanta (warmth in the middle of winter?), where there just so happens to be a four month old little friend who I need to meet and snuggle!

5. Currently binge watching: Party of Five. I started from the beginning a few weeks ago. Now if I go a few days without the Salinger clan, I start to miss them. Also, reliving 90’s fashion via the TV show that carried me through most of my high school years is hilarious.

6. I’m still recovering to a weekend full of awesome: G Love at House of Blues on Friday, a party  (turned sleepover due to the snow) on Saturday, and dinner and Cards Against Humanity with more friends on Sunday.

7. I’m sure that everyone in the greater Boston area wants to punch me in the nose for this, but I am still giddy every time I see snow in the forecast! I know it’s a hassle for most people but since we don’t own a car, our landlord is responsible for snow removal, and I have the flexibility to work from home instead of commuting in crappy weather…well, I love sitting in the office/guest room with a hot beverage in my hand, watching the snow fall outside my window while I’m working away. Snow is the only reason that I put up with cold winters!

8. Have you guys seen the site Can I Stream. It? I just finished reading my boyfriend Rob Lowe’s  book Stories I Only Tell My Friends, which led to a lot of checking to see if I can stream all of the movies that he references. Unfortunately for me, the answer is usually “not unless you pay for it!”

9. I’ve been a total slacker on the blog-front lately, and I’m actually feeling a little guilty about having so much from the last few months that I haven’t shared here. I shouldn’t feel guilty, since there are only three of you that read this…it’s more that I love having this psuedo-journal to look back at what I was doing last February (ummm…not blogging) or the February before that (hanging at Club MGH, visiting local breweries, attempting to take a photo a day), or the February before THAT (eating cheese, crocheting, hanging out with Barley, listening to Pete play guitar)…or the February before THAT, haha (laundry at the Chocolate Factory! – I miss those sweat pants! And that apartment!, playing games). I’ll stop now, because I think that the pictures from the February before that…wait, NO. In February 2009 I was on vacation in NH with friends, taking photos of Leyre’s growing belly, and taking awesome selfies. I am really going to stop now, but if you’re really bored/curious, you can see February 2008 and 2007 for yourself – just be warned that a lot of photos from those very early days were hosted somewhere else and are missing. Anyway, that whole trip down memory lane is exactly why I am annoyed with myself for not keeping up with the blog regularly – it’s super fun to have this quick and easy look back at what was going on way back when!

10. If you made it this far, good for you! I had photos ready to go to make this more interesting, but apparently WordPress, Flickr, and I are in a fight! Barley is begging for someone to play fetch with him, and I’ve got a sink full of dishes that Pete says are my responsibility, so it’s time for me to give up on my photos and just get this posted already!

Can’t Stop Won’t Stop

(Kind of like my occasional Currently posts)

Can’t stop won’t stop…

…watching The Good Wife. Three seasons down in about a month? Great cold weather binge watching!

…listening to Frank Turner. This is the song that he opened his show with when we saw him at House of Blues a few weeks ago, and it’s been in my head ever since. If you have ~15 minutes, watch his NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert (and enjoy those dimples).  The song below might be my fav of his (and was included in the London Olympics opening ceremony).

…reading the Divergent series. I’ve had this series on my “read those!” list for a long time now, but seeing the trailer for the first movie before Catching Fire prompted me to do so STAT. I have been reading in every free moment since (well…every free moment that isn’t taken up by Good Wife, haha).

…eating mac and cheese (specifically: Annie’s shells & white cheddar). At least once a week. Usually the entire box by myself (don’t judge), but occasionally I share with Pete. Sometimes I throw in frozen peas, because adding veggies makes it healthy.

…plotting and planning for 2014. This year has flown past and been so awesome and so not awesome in so many different ways. I’m excited to see what next year will bring, and finding it harder than usual to enjoy the good stuff that’s happening right now instead of thinking about the next thing.

…looking forward to my upcoming vacation (and Christmas and New Years)! T-minus 6 days until I fly to Virginia, and Boss Lady flat out told me to take an extra two days off instead of bringing my computer with me to work remotely (have I ever mentioned that I have a great Boss Lady?). I can’t wait to hug a whole bunch of my favorite people!
